What does Scripture have to say about physical healing and giving thanks? Today’s WORSHIP QUOTE is seven familiar verses from Luke's Gospel—the narrative about Jesus healing the ten lepers. Try to read this story with the ears of an eager and receptive child, possibly hearing it for the first time.

JESUS HEALS TEN MEN WITH LEPROSY (LUKE 17:11-17)
Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

— Luke 17:11-17 (NIV)

Remember Chip Stam's favorite Thanksgiving hymn:
"MY HEART IS FILLED WITH THANKFULNESS"
You can purchase the piano/vocal score and an SATB hymnal version at www.gettymusic.com/USA-sheetmusic.aspx?category=piano. There is a nice version of Kristyn Getty singing this on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSrAhzVD6Lw. If you use it with the congregation, you will want to sing it a bit faster than this solo version.

November 23 Treatment Update

Dear friends and family,

Once again, thanks for loving us and praying for us faithfully during this long (really long!) cancer journey. Journal entries and some new pictures are found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/carlstam. God has been very good to us in so many ways..

GRAFT VS. HOST DISEASE—ROLLER COASTER
There is still no sign of active Lymphoma in my body (Praise God!). The daily concern about Graft vs. Host Disease continues, changes, and intensifies. My pillbox was adjusted again today—this time, the steroids have been reduced in an attempt to relieve some of the swelling in my feet and ankles. I arrive at the cancer clinic for 2 to 6 hours of testing and treatment every morning at about 7:45am (including Saturdays and Sundays). That's where I will be on Thanksgiving morning.

The doctors now have me on a medication to address the peripheral neuropathy (numbness and swelling in my legs, feet, face, and neck). In addition to taking NEURONTIN (GABAPENTIN) every evening, I will see a neurologist on December 1. They have put me on a morning dose of FUROSEMIDE (LASIX, which they also use on race horses) to help with the swelling. When my oncologist saw the MRI and MRA in question, he said that the scans were unremarkable. My CMV virus and EB virus (Epstein-Barr) numbers continue to be very low or at zero (Praise God!); the BK virus (bladder infection) is still better (Wonderful!). The regular adjustment of the steroid dose seems to be a tug-of-war between the GvsH rash (more steroids needed) and the swollen ankles and feet (fewer steroids desired). I am still VERY, VERY weak physically and need to keep my feet elevated a good part of the day. Thankfully, I still have my appetite. I move slowly and very carefully. My snazzy walker is much loved and much used.

CHRISTMAS PRESENT IDEA—DORIS'S BOOK
Please take a look at the material on the web site: MOUNTAIN EDUCATORS: THE DOUGHERTY FAMILY AND THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS OF APPALACHIAN. Doris's relatives started Watauga Academy in 1899 (Boone, NC), a little mountain school that finally became Appalachian State University. If you know happy alumni or fans of ASU, please pass this information to them. (www.tinyurl.com/mountaineducators)

CANCER CARE
Please keep praying fervently for Doris, our family, my caregivers, and me; and don't forget to pray for and care for the cancer patients in your families, churches, neighborhoods, and places of employment. Pray that our stem cell drive will provide many, many cancer patients with life-saving options for treatment. If you would like to swab your cheek and participate in our drive, it is not too late.

Straining towards Jesus,

Chip Stam
