I trust that many of you have had the blessing of singing “In Christ Alone,” “The Power of the Cross,” and "Speak, O Lord," three of the many great new hymns by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty. Today’s WORSHIP QUOTE is my favorite Thanksgiving hymn by the same pair. “My Heart Is Filled with Thankfulness” expresses the Christian’s gratitude to God for all that it means to be “in Christ”—salvation, sanctification, and the sure promise of eternity with the Lord.

MY HEART IS FILLED WITH THANKFULNESS

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who bore my pain;
Who plumbed the depths of my disgrace
And gave me life again;
Who crushed my curse of sinfulness,
And clothed me with His light,
And wrote His law of righteousness
With power upon my heart.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who walks beside;
Who floods my weaknesses with strength
And causes fears to fly;
Whose every promise is enough
For every step I take.
Sustaining me with arms of love
And crowning me with grace.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who reigns above;
Whose wisdom is my perfect peace,
Whose every thought is love.
For every day I have on earth
Is given by the King.
So I will give my life, my all,
To love and follow Him.

You can purchase the piano/vocal score and an SATB hymnal version at www.gettymusic.com/USA-sheetmusic.aspx?category=piano. There is a nice version of Kristyn Getty singing this on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSrAhzVD6Lw. If you use it with the congregation, you will want to sing it a bit faster than this solo version.

November 17 Treatment Update

Dear friends and family,

Once again, thanks for loving us and praying for us during this long (really long!) cancer journey. Journal entries and some new pictures are found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/carlstam. Our cup overflows.

GRAFT VS. HOST DISEASE—ROLLER COASTER
Still no sign of active Lymphoma in my body. Praise God! The daily concern about Graft vs. Host Disease continues, changes, and intensifies. My pillbox was adjusted again this morning—this time, more steroids and other things added and subtracted.

On Saturday morning (Nov. 13) in the cancer clinic, all was well and routine with my treatment until we noticed that I could not get warm. One blanket didn't help. A second blanket didn't do the trick. It turned out that I had a 101.2 fever. For a normal person, that is no big deal perhaps; but for someone with a suppressed immune system, like me, that can be very serious. They immediately gave me a couple of infusions of antibiotics. They flirted with the idea of putting me in the hospital. By Saturday evening my fever was gone. The antibiotic treatment has continued each day into this new week. Other symptoms: my CMV virus numbers have been very low or at zero (Praise God!); the BK virus (bladder infection) seems to be still better; even the EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) numbers have been negative or very low (Wonderful!). The GvH rash and peripheral neuropathy (numbness and swelling in my feet and legs) are worse. That is why they have increased the steroids dose again. I am still VERY, VERY weak physically. Chip Stam moves slowly and carefully.

CHRISTMAS PRESENT IDEA—DORIS'S BOOK
Please take a look at the material on the web site: MOUNTAIN EDUCATORS: THE DOUGHERTY FAMILY AND THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS OF APPALACHIAN. Doris's relatives started Watauga Academy in 1899 (Boone, NC), a little mountain school that finally became Appalachian State University. If you know any happy alumni or fans of ASU, please pass this information to them. (www.tinyurl.com/mountaineducators)

CANCER CARE
Please keep praying fervently for Doris, our family, my caregivers, and me; and don't forget to pray for and care for the cancer patients in your families, churches, neighborhoods, and places of employment. Pray that our stem cell drive will provide many, many cancer patients with life-saving options for treatment. If you would like to swab your cheek and participate in our drive, it is not too late.

Straining towards Jesus,

Chip Stam
