Today's WORSHIP QUOTE is from the quill of Thomas à Kempis, a 15th-century priest and devotional writer. The author, in his THE IMITATION OF CHRIST deals with what it means to identify with Christ's suffering. It makes clear the weakness of being a fair-weather follower of Jesus—certainly not a biblical view.

OF THE SMALL NUMBER OF LOVERS OF THE CROSS OF JESUS
Jesus hath now many lovers of His heavenly kingdom,
but few bearers of His Cross.
He hath many that are desirous of consolation,
but few of tribulation.
He finds many companions of His table,
but few of His abstinence.
All desire to rejoice with Him,
but few are willing to endure anything for His sake.
Many follow Jesus to the breaking of bread,
but few to the drinking of the chalice of His Passion.
Many reverence His miracles,
but few follow the ignominy of His Cross.
Many love Jesus as long as they meet with no adversity,
Many praise Him and bless Him as long as they receive
some consolations from Him.
But if Jesus hid Himself, and leave them for a little while,
they either murmur or fall into excessive dejection.

— Thomas à Kempis (1379 - 1471), from IMITATIO CHRISTI (THE IMITATION OF CHRIST), as collected in 2000 YEARS SINCE BETHLEHEM: IMAGES OF CHRIST THROUGH THE CENTURIES, compiled by Janice T. Grana, Upper Room Books, 1998. [The oldest book I own is a 1726 copy of THE IMITATION OF CHRIST, in Italian, published in Vienna. Other than the Bible, this book is the most widely translated book in Christian literature.]

September 16 Treatment Update

Dear friends and family,

Thanks again for loving us and praying for us during this long cancer journey. Longer journal entries and new pictures are found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/carlstam.

BACK IN THE HOSPITAL
The daily fight against Graft vs. Host Disease continues. On Tuesday, September 14, the CMV virus levels came back as somewhat elevated such that they decided to put me in the hospital for twice-a-day treatments of FOSCARNET to combat this particular manifestation of GvsH. Not sure how long I will be in the hospital. I am not in pain, just very weak and in need of this particular treatment. Take a look at www.caringbridge.org/visit/carlstam. (click on Journal)

CANCER CARE
Please keep praying for Doris, our family, my caregivers, and me; and don't forget to care for the cancer patients in your families, churches, neighborhoods, and places of employment. Pray that our stem cell drive will provide many, many cancer patients with life-saving options for treatment. Just this week we heard that one of our stem cell drive team was called back for the next round of screening. He may well be in line to save a life. Pretty exciting. God can do this. We have met and surpassed our fund-raising goal ($51,000), and we are about fifty DNA samples short of our goal of 1,800 swab kits. If you would like to swab your cheek and participate, it is not too late.

Resting in His matchless love and care,

Chip Stam
