Today’s WORSHIP QUOTE is one of my favorite modern Communion hymns, “Gift of Finest Wheat.” I find the fourth verse particularly helpful as I ponder Christ's real and mysterious presence at the Table.

"GIFT OF FINEST WHEAT"

REFRAIN:
You satisfy the hungry heart with gift of finest wheat;
Come give to us, O saving Lord, the bread of life to eat.

As when the shepherd calls his sheep,
They know and heed his voice;
So when you call your fam’ly, Lord,
We follow and rejoice.

With joyful lips we sing to You
Our praise and gratitude.
That you should count us worthy, Lord,
To share this heav’nly food.

Is not the cup we bless and share
The blood of Christ our-poured?
Do not one cup, one loaf declare
Our oneness in the Lord?

The myst’ry of Your presence, Lord,
No mortal tongue can tell:
Whom all the world cannot contain
Comes in our hearts to dwell.

You give Yourself to us, O Lord;
Then selfess let us be,
To serve each other in Your name
In truth and charity.

— Omer Westendorf (1919-97) © 1997 Archdiocese of Philadelphia. [MUSIC: Robert Kreutz, 1976] I love the setting for choir and congregation by John Ferguson (GIA G-3089).

Communion should remind us of the yesterday-today-forever aspect of the gospel.

“As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup” — today
“you proclaim my death” — yesterday, Christ's atoning death on the cross
“until I come again.” — future (hope)

Blessings to all!

August 31 Treatment Update

Dear friends and family,

Thanks again for loving us and praying for us during this long cancer journey. More information and new pictures are found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/carlstam.

THE DAILY FIGHT AGAINST GRAFT vs. HOST DISEASE
We are still focused on the bladder infection that has been inconvenient and incredibly painful. Another aspect of the GvsH is the CMV virus. These numbers are tested twice each week, and they have been fluctuating from the 2,000s to the 11,000s. The doctors work hard to keep these numbers low. Dr. Herzig told me yesterday (Monday, August 30) that if the numbers continue to creep up, they will have to admit me to the hospital so that I can receive two-a-day FOSCARNET treatments (That worked before, whereas the once-a-day in the clinic failed to keep the numbers in line). Thankfully, my daily steroid doses have been lowered such that the swelling in my feet and ankles is greatly reduced.

The LORD continues to give us patience and strength for this journey—even some joy. We have people visiting regularly to pray for us, and we have received many beautiful displays of love and kindness. I use my snazzy new walker every day, and I love it.

CANCER CARE
Please keep praying for Doris, our family, my caregivers, and me; and don't forget to care for the cancer patients in your families, churches, neighborhoods, and places of employment. Pray that our stem cell drive will provide many, many cancer patients with life-saving options for treatment. God can do this. We have met and surpassed our fund-raising goal ($51,000), and we are about fifty DNA samples short of our goal of 1,800 swab kits. If you would like to swab your cheek and participate, it is not too late.

Resting in His matchless love and care,

Chip Stam
