The Worship Quote of the Week for (06/06/2006):

Pentecost Hymn
Today’s WORSHIP QUOTE is a wonderful Pentecost text from a brand new collection by Timothy Dudley-Smith. This poem about the Holy Spirit also doubles as a prayer of illumination for the reading and preaching of God’s Word. If you like, you can sing it to NEW BRITAIN (“Amazing Grace”).

O SPIRIT OF THE SOVEREIGN LORD
(based on Isaiah 61:1-3)

O Spirit of the Sovereign Lord,
descend in power, we pray,
on all who minister your word
and teach your truth today.

May those whom God has set apart,
anointed, called and blessed,
announce good news to every heart
by want or sin oppressed.

Let songs of liberty be sung,
the lamps of freedom burn;
as wide the prison gates are flung
forgotten hopes return.

The favor of the Lord proclaim
in pardon freely given,
for just and righteous is his Name,
the God of earth and heaven.

May all who mourn, his comfort know;
their every tear be dried;
as trees of righteousness to grow
that God be glorified.

O Spirit of the Sovereign Lord,
descend on us who pray,
renew your church in deed and word
to serve your world today.
