The Worship Quote of the Week for (02/28/2006):

"I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say"
Today's WORSHIP QUOTE is a hymn text that I really love. Notice the themes of the three verses: Jesus is a resting place for the weary; he gives life-giving water to the thirsty; and he is light for those in darkness.

“I HEARD THE VOICE OF JESUS SAY”

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad;
I found in Him a resting place, and He has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one, stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in Him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found in Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk, till traveling days are done.

— Horatio Bonar, from HYMNS SELCTED AND ORIGINAL, 1846. The most familiar tune for this text is VOX DILECTI (John Dykes, 1868), in which the first half of each verse is in a minor key, and then it shifts to major for lines three and four. You can hear that version at www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/i/h/iheardtv.htm. My favorite setting these days is by Indelible Grace. You can get a free lead sheet and hear a demo version at http://igracemusic.com/igracemusic/hymnbook/hymns/i03.html.
