Today’s WORSHIP QUOTE is a short devotional poem by Martin Luther. This text is part of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Christmas cantata HODIE (THIS DAY).

THE BLESSED SON OF GOD

The blessed son of God only
In a crib full poor did lie;
With our poor flesh and our poor blood
Was clothed that everlasting good.
Kyrieleison. (Lord, have mercy.)

The Lord Christ Jesu, God’s son dear,
Was a guest and a stranger here;
Us for to bring from misery,
That we might live eternally.
Kyrieleison. (Lord, have mercy.)

All this did he for us freely,
For to declare his great mercy;
All Christendom be merry therefore,
And give him thanks for evermore.
Kyrieleison. (Lord, have mercy.)

—Martin Luther (1483-1546); English translation by Miles Coverdale (Bishop of Exeter, 1488-1569). This is movement five (unaccompanied chorus) from Ralph Vaughan Williams’s glorious Christmas cantata HODE (THIS DAY).
